Prevent In Newcastle

Newcastle is a safe, diverse and largely tolerant city, but we cannot be complacent. Prevent is part of the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy CONTEST and is designed to safeguard vulnerable people and communities from the threat of radicalisation and extremism. The main aim of Prevent is to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. At the heart of Prevent is safeguarding children and adults and providing early intervention to protect and divert people away from being drawn into terrorist activity. The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 contains a duty on what are called ‘specified authorities’ to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. In March 2015, Parliament approved guidance, issued under section 29 of the Act, on how specified authorities should comply with their Prevent duty. Documentation was revised in July 2015.
