AlcoholWatch - Tackling anti-social behaviour in local areas

Page content

Byker case-study

AlcoholWatch has seen a 23 per cent reduction in youth-related anti-social behaviour on the Byker Wall estate.

Khalid Majid is a shop-owner in the area. In the past he has had bad experiences of groups of young people hanging around his shop and attempting to buy alcohol. Adults buying alcohol for under 18s was also a problem, despite the threat of arrest or a fine of up £400.

He was approached by his Community Support Officer, Rob Hart, to join the scheme. Rob visited the shop each week to check that Khalid has enough stickers and check on how he was getting along. Within a week, Khalid had noticed a big drop in the number of young people hanging around his store. Thanks also to the scheme, Khalid has deveopled a good relationship with his local CSOs and knows them all by name.

Rob is very pleased with the results that AlcoholWatch has had in his area. Residents have been telling him that they feel much safer in their area as there are no youths hanging around thier street corners. They also feel comfortable going to their local shops as they know they will not be pestered by young people to buy them alcohol. Environmentally, the area is much better as they are less discarded alcohol bottles in the area.
