There are many things you can do to improve your safety and reduce and prevent your risk of being a victim of crime.
Northumbria Police has set out some guidelines on their website, click here to find out more
We know that community safety is not only about levels of crime, it is also about how safe people feel living, working, visiting and socialising in Newcastle. You can get involved in making our city safer by doing small but important things every day.
Take sensible steps to reduce crime and risks:
- Keep your property secure – get window and secure door locks fitted. Always remember to lock your front and back doors
- Always ask for ID before letting anyone into your house – it is OK to say no if you’re not sure Lock your car and don’t leave valuables in it, even for a short time
- Get a smoke alarm fitted and have a ‘fire plan’, including keeping all escape routes clear
Look after the environment:
- Put your rubbish out on the right day, and bring in your wheelie bin promptly
- Be considerate to neighbours by keeping noise and music down at night
- Report graffiti, damage and faulty street lights to Envirocall - (0191) 274 4000
- Dispose of litter in bins, not on the street – or you may face a spot fine
Be an active part of your community:
- Get involved in community activities – check out Citylife or your local library for some ideas
Become a volunteer – Contact the Volunteer Centre Newcastle for more information - (0191) 232 6616
Think about joining a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, or maybe setting one up in your street
- If it's not an emergency but you still want to report anti-social behaviour, you can call 101
- Help the police make your area a safer one – report anything suspicious to them or call Crime Stoppers - 0800 555 111
Young people are affected by crime too:
- Keep your mobile phone safe – make sure you set your security code.
- Remember, it is harder for anyone to spike your drink if you buy bottles and keep them with you
- If you’re being bullied at school, you have a right to be protected. Tell someone about it.
- Being a student is an opportunity to work hard and have plenty of fun – remember to be security conscious where you’re living and be considerate to your neighbours
Crime Prevention Advice for students: Newcastle is a very popular city for students but unfortunately it is common for students to be victims of crime. On average 1 in 3 students become victims of crime whilst at university* We work closely Newcastle University, Northumbria University and Newcastle College on crime prevention and community safety initiatives, including a website www.knowurstuff.co.uk with advice to follow to make sure memories of University are not of crime committed against you or your friends.
