Denton Crime Fighter Visits House of Commons

Page content

Crime Fighters at CourtOn 7 December 2009 the Home Secretary invited a small number of Community Crime Fighters to the House of Commons to recognise their hard work in helping to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in their local area.

Amongst the few invited to this special occasion was Margaret O'Callaghan (centre) who has been an active member of her community in Denton and who has also worked closely with Safe Newcastle on the neighbourhood crime and justice participatory budgeting event in March of last year.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson said: "Today marks a milestone in the Community Crime Fighters programme. A year ago we set out to train 3,600 people - in fact we've reached almost 4,000. We all know that crime is tackled most effectively when communities work together with local services. The public know what is really going on in their neighbourhood, what the real problems are and where residents' concerns lie.

That's what the Community Crime Fighters are all about - people, who care about their neighbourhood, know about what should be done to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and work tirelessly for free to get things done in behalf of local people. All of them have their own story and their own motivation, but what they all have in common is a determination to make things better for their communities."
