TOGETHER Action Day

Tackling anti-social behaviour across Newcastle was top of the agenda at a TOGETHER Action Day.

The Action Day, organised by Safe Newcastle, brought together local agencies to help find solutions to issues and problems in Newcastle.

It provided invaluable help from leading experts to those working to tackle anti-social behaviour in Newcastle, with the aim of making it a better place for the law-abiding majority.

The TOGETHER Action Day, an initiative under the Government’s Respect campaign, was delivered by Alex Rhind, the Assistant Director of the Home Office’s Anti-social Behaviour Unit. Representatives from Northumbria Police, Newcastle City Council, Your Homes Newcastle and community groups heard how to get results from the specialists.

Advice was given about dealing with a number of problems, including nuisance neighbours, graffiti and harassment from young people.

Tackling anti social behaviour is one of Safe Newcastle’s 9 priority outcomes to be achieved by 2008. By working with local people and other partners many initiatives are in place across the City to reduce anti-social behaviour.

Louise Casey, the Government’s Coordinator for Respect said “This TOGETHER Action Day shows that Newcastle is stepping up a gear in their fight to tackle anti-social behaviour.

“An Action Day is just that – your local authority together with the police and other partners refocusing their efforts to take action. We bring new ideas and approaches from experts across the country so that the blockages are removed and the full range of powers can be used in the fight against the minority of people in Newcastle who are wrecking the lives of the law abiding majority.”

Kevin McGready, Anti-Social Behaviour Coordinator for Safe Newcastle added:

“The experts that have been here today have a wealth of experience and knowledge in effectively tackle anti-social behaviour both in this area and throughout the country. Their expertise can only be of benefit to those working to tackle anti-social behaviour in Newcastle.

“Our Action Day has been very successful, with our practitioners taking away new ideas and solutions to local problems.

“Anti-social behaviour is a problem not just in Newcastle but throughout the UK. Safe Newcastle supports a balance proportionate approach which includes targeted enforcement options that can not only reduce crime but increase community confidence.”
