Staying Safe During the Darker Nights
Page content
As the nights draw in, thoughts turn to Bonfire Night. This can be a fantastic time for everyone but the darker nights can also attract anti-social behaviour and opportunistic crime. Safe Newcastle is urging you to take a few simple steps to keep you, your family and your home safe:
On Bonfire Night
- Go to an organised display.
- Always supervise children around fireworks.
- Never give sparklers to children under five.
- Remember: alcohol and fireworks don’t mix.
Stop Anti-social Behaviour
- Don't dump rubbish - this is illegal and you may be fined up to £5,000. If you need bulky waste removed phone Envirocall on 0191 274 4000.
- Help prevent illegal fires and bonfires. Report any collections of waste material to Envirocall.
- Look after your wheelie bin. It can be set alight, stolen or used to stand on to break into your house. Put it out on the morning of collection and bring it back in as soon as possible after it’s emptied.
- Call 999 to report any illegal bonfires that have been lit.
Keep Yourself Safe
- Be safe and seen – stick to well lit streets, especially when crossing the road and wear visible or light clothing.
- Keep your home secure.
- Leave a light on when you’re not in – it will make your home look occupied and put burglars off.
- Lock all windows and doors.
- Do not leave your valuables where they can be easily seen.
