What is Safe Neighbourhoods?

Safe Neighbourhoods solves problems or concerns about crime, community safety and anti-social behaviour in local neighbourhoods.

By bringing partners together it means these issues can be dealt with quickly and effectively, making areas safe, clean and green.

Residents in Newcastle have a team dedicated to fighting crime and anti-social behaviour in their local community.

SNAPS (Safe Neighbourhoods Action and Problems Solving) groups operate in every ward of the city, putting solutions in place to tackle the problems particular to that area. Each group includes a Neighbourhood Inspector from Northumbria Police, Your Homes Newcastle Housing Manager, local Ward Co-ordinator, local Councillor, and Neighbourhood Response Manager.

Local people and community groups have a crucial role to play in Safe Neighbourhoods..

How to get involved?

If you have any problems or concerns about crime, anti-social behaviour or community safety these should be fed in to your local SNAPS group. You should speak to your local:

  • Ward Coordinator: call 0191 277 3614 / 0191 277 3616
  • Local Councillors: visit Where You Live on www.newcastle.gov.uk to find details
  • Housing Manager: call YHN on 0191 278 8600 or visit www.yhn.org.uk to find details of your nearest housing office
  • Neighbourhood Police Inspector: call 03456 043 043
  • Neighbourhood Response Manager: 0191 274 4000 (also use this number to contact Envirocall).

Safe Neighbourhoods in Action

Local SNAPS groups across the city have been working together to put in place many different actions to improve community safety as part of Safe Neighbourhoods. Here are some examples:

  • Provided youth activities for young people in Denton through Street Games; delivering sports and dance on local streets.
  • Helped to reduce youth disorder and criminal damage in Walker by supporting an outreach service to early school leavers offering taster courses in vocational activities.
  • Reduced thefts of property from motor vehicles in the West End by using ‘stinger’ cars and hidden cameras as well as a publicity campaign in local hot spot areas.
  • Ran an awareness campaign aimed at residents in the Heaton Terraces offering invaluable burglary reduction advice and useful contact information.
  • Improved the security of a local primary school following a series of break-ins and incidents of criminal damage.
  • Reduced criminal damage in Gosforth and Great Park by 35% compared to the previous year by identifying hotspots and offenders and dedicating resources to tackle this.
  • Working to combat youth related anti-social in Denton and Westerhope by identifying disorder areas and speaking to local residents, including young people to gauge their views and opinions how to resolve the situation.
  • Taken the message of Safe Neighbourhoods  on the road for the last two years as part of the Home Office's Not in My Neighbourhood Week. Giving local people the opportunity to have their say and meet the people and organisations who are working to make their area safer.
