Alcohol

There isn't a day goes by without newspaper headlines warning us about the dangers of alcohol. But what are the facts?

Did you know that:
- The North East has more people who drink at harmful levels than the rest of the country
- We have fewer services for treating people with serious alcohol problems and longer waiting times
- We top the league of binge-drinkers in England
Alcohol misuse affects individuals, families and communities. It is a major factor in anti-social behaviour and crime. It affects everything from the quality of home life, family finances, education, health and how safe we feel on public transport and in the city-centre at night.
This is a serious problem for Newcastle and one that we are working with the Newcastle Partnership with the city's first ever multi-agency alcohol strategy. The strategy sets out how all the agencies are going to deal with this issue, including the police, the Primary Care Trust and the voluntary and community sectors.
Click on the items below for more information on what we're doing to tackle alcohol-related issues in Newcastle:
- Review licenses and instigate legal proceedings where necessary
- Prevent sales to those underage
- Tackle alcohol-related violence in the city-centre and neighbourhoods
- public awareness campaigns on alcohol
