Services to prevent harm to children, young people and families affected by drug misuse

We provide opportunities for young people to learn about drugs and alcohol and the harm they cause. This happens in schools and in many youth services.
We have set up a service called D’n’A (tel. 08000 730 470), which provides drug and alcohol services for young people. The service works with young people who are more likely to be in a situation where they take drugs or drink. This includes young offenders, children in care and those not attending school.
The service also provides counselling work with young people who have started to take drugs or drink. And, nurses and doctors provide medical treatment if necessary. The service is available to people from across Newcastle wherever they live.
Workers travel to local areas to meet with young people. You may have heard of some of the services that are part of D’n’A. They include Plummer Court, North East Council on Addictions (NECA), the Youth Offending Team (YOT), Social Services and Educational Welfare.
We also provide opportunities for young people to get involved in activities, such as sport, music and drama. These activities aim to reduce the likelihood that young people will take drugs or drink.
Other young people's services
You may also have heard of other services that work with young people around drink and drugs. They include Streetwise, Positive Futures, West End Youth Enquiry Service (WEYES) and the Resettlement and Aftercare Programme (RAP).
Working with families
We also provide services that work with families affected by drug or alcohol use. This could be work with one individual or work with a whole family. You may have heard of these services, which include PROPS, Changing Trax and Strengthening Families.
