Graded responses and ASBOs - ASBOs

Page content

Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) are not intended as a punishment. They protect the public, by banning someone who has caused trouble from doing certain things or going to certain places. Anyone over 10 can be given an ASBO by, among others:

  • the council
  • the police
  • their landlord
  • the Environment Agency

Does it work?

ASBOs have been used in Newcastle since 2001, and have targeted the ringleaders of gangs in Scotswood and Cruddas Park. But applying for an ASBO is complicated and takes time, with different Safe Newcastle agencies taking part in consultations to decide how to get the best results. More work is being done to find out how successful ASBOs are

There are three types of ASBO. These are:

  • ASBO linked to conviction
  • Stand-alone ASBOs
  • Interim ASBOs
