What we're doing - SHAPE bus
Page content
Safe Newcastle and Newcastle Youth Service have a mobile outreach service in the shape of big red bus - the SHAPE bus.
The name is linked to the Governments five key outcomes for young people: staying safe, being healthy; enjoying and achieving; making a positive contribution and economic well being.
The bus is used to engage with young people who are at risk of crime and disorder. Rowdy youths drinking and congregating on Kenton Bar estate was a major concern for residents until the SHAPE bus arrived.
Previously, due to lack of resources in the area for young people, there was nowhere for teenagers to go apart from street corners. The bus provided the young people with a safe place to meet and lots of activities such as dj-ing, craft activities and sport.
The bus has been a big hit with youths and residents who have seen anti-social behaviour decrease and community safety increase. Young people can access free advice, support and information and most importantly have fun in a safe way.
The SHAPE bus and its workers help build postive relationships with young people, boost their confidence and self-esteem, and gives them something exciting to do.
